There are well over 100 types of cancers in the world today, ranging from minor to life threatening cancer types.
In Nigeria, breast and cervical cancer are said to be the commonest type of cancer among women, while prostrate cancer seems very prominent among men.
While medical experts are doing their best to unravel the mystery behind the scourge of cancer, they have hinted on its probable causes some of which are:
a) biological or internal factors, such as age, gender, inherited genetic defects and skin type;
b) environmental exposure, for instance to radon and UV radiation, and fine particulate matter;
c) occupational risk factors, including carcinogens such as many chemicals, radioactive materials and asbestos and
d) lifestyle-related factors.
Prevention they say is better than cure. The following lifestyle tips are believed to greatly reduce or prevent cancer:
a) Avoid tobacco/smoking
b) Eat a healthy diet
c) Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active
d) Protect yourself from the sun
e) Get vaccinated
f) Avoid risky behaviors
g) Get regular medical care
